One of my interests as a PhD student is in bringing internet access to those who can’t afford the enormous fees charged by most telcos. So I thought I’d start compiling a list of resources for those who are interested in access.

NetEquality.org is a non-profit that specializes in bringing low-cost, affordable wifi access to other non-profits and low-income areas. The best thing about their site is this howto wiki that is a step-by-step instructional on setting up your own wifi network. This could allow neighbors to share DSL charges. Up to 25 users can access the network which can bring the monthly cost for each user down to around a $1. As more and more people begin to rely on the interweb for…everything, access is going to become a human rights issue. Right now the internet is owned by about four big telcos (most of it by AT&T) who are charging more and more exorbitant fees, not to mention restricting access and setting download limits. Become a wifi guerilla and subvert these monopolistic greedmongers.
